About Gecan

Gecan is an American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO/AMRL) certified asphalt laboratory.  Gecan manager Tony Manzi’s industry experience and testing expertise have been leveraged by the Colas group of companies in the set up and operation of this facility.  Changing regulations and standards within the industry have created a shift away from penetration/viscosity based testing, and towards performance grading.  Performance grading correlates required physical properties of asphalt to temperature profiles for a planned area of usage

History

Gecan was established in the summer of 2004 in response to a need identified within the industry for local and timely asphalt binder performance grading. Gecan’s asphalt laboratory, located in N.E. Calgary, is equipped with state of the art equipment and instrumentation to perform both Superpave performance grading, and conventional asphalt cement (AC) testing.  Tony Manzi, with 30 + years experience has overseen the set up of Gecan’s AC Laboratory which has the certifications for AASHTO, and ASTM.  Tony  oversees operations at the laboratory, ensuring that high standards are maintained and documented.

Capabilities

The variety of testing capabilities available to Gecan clients allows the laboratory to simultaneously provide service to several business sectors, including conventional oilfield, heavy crude and tarsand/oilshale production, as well as road construction.
